My nine-year-old son Ethan’s usual barber had a new helper, Marcus, who noticed something behind Ethan’s left ear during a routine haircut and quietly told me to check it at home. I found a small patch hiding a tiny black disc, and Ethan admitted a man who “knew Dad” had put it there and told him to keep it secret.

My husband Ryan had died three years earlier, and Ethan had been hungry for any piece of him. Police found a hidden case in our closet and a camera under our porch. The man was Ryan’s estranged brother, Derek, who had stolen family money and planned to use Ethan to plant forged documents in Ryan’s storage boxes, framing the dead man. Ryan’s genuine evidence was already in those boxes, and Derek was arrested. Afterward, I stopped avoiding Ryan’s memory and began sharing stories with Ethan openly, so no one could ever use his father against him again.
