Hidden Words on a Grave

What began as a private joke now sits in stone at the center of a very public argument. To the children, the acrostic is a secret handshake with the dead, a last shared smirk with the man who raised them to laugh at the world, even at the end. They visit the grave and see warmth, memory, and a promise kept.

The trustees see something colder: a crack in the surface of order. If this profanity stands, they fear the cemetery will slowly turn from sacred ground into a canvas for every provocation. Between those fears and that love lies an uneasy truth: a legacy is never entirely private, never entirely public. It lives in the hearts of the few who knew the person, and in the eyes of the many who only see the stone. And sometimes, those two visions can’t be carved into the same piecestone.
